You know that facial wash or toothpaste you use with microbeads? Microplastics, plastics 5mm or less in size, are increasingly sneaking through water treatment filtration systems and finding their way into food webs of various waterways. Check out the latest news from NY below. On Monday, the New York State Assembly unanimously passed a bill that would enact the Microbead-Free Waters Act. This would prohibit the sale of personal care products, including facial scrubs, shampoos and toothpastes (and other items) containing plastic microbeads in the state of NY. The Act cites the threats that microbeads, which have been documented in large concentrations in the Great Lakes, pose to the environment and economy. The bill is now with the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee for review. If passed, this ban would be the first of its kind and would serve as a great model for other states looking to curb sources of the growing microplastics pollution problem.
