You know what astonishes me sometimes? How lucky I have been to work with such good actors in my career. To grow with them in my writing because of what they bring into the rehearsal room. I am nothing without actors. Honestly, I was born in the wrong time, I would have been so much better for a repertory company and writing all my plays for these voices. I have to confess, I love writing in the rehearsal room, I love writing through tech, I would even write through the run of a show (which I sometimes do… but people get understandably annoyed… tee hee hee, cough cough chay yew cough jon lawrence rivera cough basically everyone i have worked with...) but mostly I like writing for actors, to their voices, to their hearts, to their passions. And sometimes an actor enters the room and you realize that the possibilities are extraordinary and that you don’t have to write for them, you have to kick it up and write for the possibility they bring into a room. I felt that way about Adam Poss. I had seen him briefly before we worked together on a Carlos Murrillo play while he was still at DePaul, I think. And then I saw a performance on tape of a Rajiv Joseph play he did in the Bay Area. By the time we worked on Oedipus El Rey at Victory Gardens, one could tell that Adam was an actor who became. He morphs into something dynamic and surprising on stage. And more exciting, to watch a young artist of color be really good is really great for the field. A man who might reflect the world we live in and elevate it with his ability to translate and take what you give and make it part of our human experience. Chicago has great actors, so many great actors, and Adam is one of them. I hope we get to work together again, I really do. He might be too big for little ole me now, but one can dream, cant they? Love you, my friend. I hope you never stop doing the work. Ever. Happy Birthday Mr. Adam Poss.
