You know what is nice? Having your autistic kid be able to come - TopicsExpress

You know what is nice? Having your autistic kid be able to come up to you and say, Drink please. Thirsty. Juice please. I know it is not a proper sentence per say, and we still havent gotten to conversational speech yet. But the ability for Bianca to express what she wants when she wants it has lead to a dramatic decrease in meltdowns. I bring this up for two reasons... the first is to let you know to keep at it. While I cannot guarantee you that your non-verbal child will speak, I can say fairly confident that for many of you they will. The other reason is to shed light on meltdowns. I firmly believe that most meltdowns are the result of frustration at the inability to communicate something. So if your child is experiencing meltdowns and is non-verbal, please look at the environment the child is in and try to work with your child to meet his/her needs. See if that doesnt decrease the number or intensity of the episodes. Whenever Bianca would start to melt down, I always ask her What is wrong? even before she could speak she would usually lead my by the hand to the source of her frustration. Remember... assume competence. :-)
