You know what really sucks, its Discovery channel!!! I have become heavily rooted and networked within the marine science environment and community. Ive surrounded myself with fellow scientists that go through a relentless gauntlet to secure research funding and complete scientific investigations for the hope and love of protecting our oceans and understanding them. All of this is done in order to conserve the delicate ecosystems that are facing unimaginable consequences of anthropogenic influences and natural changes. As a child I grew up loving shark week, understanding that for one full week people would see how amazing these (400+) species are and begin to understand why we need to collect data in order to further understand what is potentially happening. To neglect the science and utilize actors as fake scientists to create this fictional bull shit is utterly disgusting. If they want to show drama, go undercover on a Japanese fishing vessel and film the utter devastation involved with shark finning. Talk about how humans are on a path to push multiple species into an endangered and extinct status. Talk about how we can help through political diplomacy and policy creation. Bring awareness to people. Do not teach them lies. This is what a true scientist does. They try to help people at the root of any cause. Please consider disconnecting from discovery channels shark week. Instead read some articles, watch some videos of shark studies on the farallone islands, do something to educate yourself on sharks, and please do not fall victim of their drive to increase viewer ratings. Take a minute and read through this article. It only begins to scratch the surface of what this drama network has done and is currently doing. Stay educated and remain aware. It breaks my heart, but until things change Im abandoning shark week. I think I could literally shed tears over this.
