You know you CAN sand leather but like pimpin it sure aint easy. What I told you about mineral oil a few weeks ago was wrong- although common in leather care products it retains moisture TOO well and can cause dry rot in time. The rule is keep with fish oil for the best supple-ness. My Kodak Panorams currently in restoration require an exotic featherweight material- dark and totally lightproof- for the swinging lens bellows. My hopeful high tech substitutes just didnt cut it, inhibiting the lens swing and changing with the weather. The scrap of old glove leather I used I finally realized could never work as its not a chamois style (far more drapey). But chamois never came thin enough so finally yesterday I sanded a scrap of it (wet, with 60 then 80 grit paper) then immersed it in dark walnut exotic wood stain. Finally I squeezed out 4 fish oil capsules on it and dried overnight under low heat. The dogs were determined to find and eat it but I thwarted them. After rinsing with a lard based commercial leather product and a dose of Resolve carpet cleaner for deodorization- the magic leather scrap is ready.......
