You know you’re getting old if you remember when college was a place for the free discussion of ideas, not speech codes so complicated that even their own creators can’t explain them. Like the University of New Mexico, where a women’s studies class encouraged students to disagree with the teacher and offer “incendiary” opinions for discussion. So after a showing of the movie “Desert Hearts,” one student wrote a paper criticizing the lesbianism in it. Turns out not all incendiary opinions are equally tolerated. She was accused of hate speech and forced out of the class. A federal court just denied the school’s request to dismiss her First Amendment lawsuit. And at Southern Oregon University, four students from a concealed carry group are facing possible disciplinary action for handing out copies of the Constitution and asking students to sign a petition to end the school’s tiny, restrictive free speech zone. An official was caught on video, ironically telling them they could only do that in the free speech zone. Also, to be fair, they had to inform petition signers of the arguments in favor of free speech zones. If it had been a petition against racism, I wonder if they would’ve been expected to list the arguments in FAVOR of racism? If the people running our colleges would just read one of those free copies of the Constitution that they’re so afraid of students seeing, then they’d know the argument against tiny free speech zones. It’s that the entire United States is a free speech zone. If your kid is even thinking of attending a university that doesn’t understand that most basic tenet of American liberty – the right to free speech - maybe you should exercise your right to send your kids – and your tuition money – to a school that does. Speaking of Free Speech, if you havent signed our Petition at ISupportFreeSpeech now would be a great time to do so. Over 85,000 Americans have so far and I wont rest until we have collected 1,000,000 signatures! We need to show the despots in Houston and elsewhere that Americans arent willing to accept their limits to our free speech!
