They were particularly interested in seizing the safe harbor area known today as Baía De Guanabara and intended to name that colony Antarctique Français. However after some land and sea battles, the Portuguese beat them to it and named their new colony Rio de Janeiro (River of January, because thats the month when they arrived, and because they mistook the bay for a river delta).
