You may find this amusing - Im at a Chinese-Christchurch Education dinner tonight with an important delegation from China and Im giving the toast on behalf of the City Council prior to dinner. My briefing notes said, at the end of my speech, raise a glass and say cheers, in Mandarin. So far so good. I just asked the translator if my pronunciation of the phrase was OK and he started laughing and offered me some helpful advice for a slightly better phrase to finish with as my phrase in the briefing notes loosely translated as skull your entire vessel immediately! A lucky save, just in time :)
