You may see Naite from Mozambique on our masthead? Hello Naite! Naite first realised he had a problem with his vision when he was just eight years old. “I was at school studying and I noticed that I couldn’t see what was written on the chalkboard like all the other kids seem to be able to do,” he said. Now 13, Naite explained he had previously undergone an eye examination, but his family couldn’t afford the glasses that were prescribed. “My first eye exam was in 2010,” he said. “But my mother told the eye doctor that the glasses were more money than we could spare at that time,” explained Naite. After hearing about the optometry clinic at Lurio University, Naite’s parents made a booking for an appointment. “My family knew we had to try to fix my vision problem,” he said. “They knew I couldn’t do well at school if my eyes weren’t right, and then that would be a bad start for my future” he said. When Naite visited the optometry clinic he was diagnosed with astigmatism by the optometrist who prescribed Naite with a pair of prescription glasses which were affordable for his family. “I am very happy that I will get a pair of glasses,” said Naite. “I’ll be able to see the chalkboard, watch TV and read books properly. Usually, when I am in class, I have to ask my friends to tell me what the teacher has written on the board. I know this distracts them, and sometimes it makes the teacher angry because he thinks I am whispering and talking in class. Now that I have these glasses, I will be able to see clearly. And I won’t have to ask my friends anymore for help. I am very excited,” he said with a smile. Courtesy Brien Holden Vision Institute. #givingsight
