You might have seen the stories but if not, the CDC is stating that this years most predominant flu virus is a variant not seen before. It first started appearing in March of 2014, after this years flu vaccines were already made. So what does that mean for you? If you got the flu shot, there might be a chance that you can still get the flu this year, but your chances are less likely than if you didnt get the flu vaccine. Thats because the new variant shares much of the same genetic material as the old viruses the shot is formulated to protect against. Heres what we recommend: 1) Get the flu vaccine if you havent; 2) If you develop the following symptoms (regardless of whether you got the flu shot): fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, then see your doctor as soon as possible to get tested for the flu. 3) If you do have the flu, then the doctor may prescribe Tamiflu or Relenza to help relieve symptoms quicker (these are anti-viral medications, not anti-biotics. Anti-biotics will not help at all). However, you shouldnt take either before you have symptoms or just cause people you know have the flu. These should only be prescribed once you have the symptoms. 4) Natural methods to protect against the flu or relieve symptoms include: Get plenty of rest, use a humidifier, drink plenty of water and tea. Tea with honey can soothe sore throats. Chicken soup can also help alleviate upper respiratory issues. A cool, damp cloth on the forehead and legs and arms can help alleviate a fever. We hope these points help but more importantly we hope everyone stays healthy though this holiday season!
