You need to be able to do the particular activity consistently, happily and successfully in order to call it a strength. Strengths are always based on natural talents. Something that you are naturally good at without thinking about it. Strengths are basically a combination of talent, knowledge and skills. Let’s take the strength “Selling”: in order to sell successfully you need to combine your talent of confronting other people with factual knowledge of the product/service that you are selling and some basic selling skills. Take public speaking: to be an outstanding public speaker you need a talent to communicate. Taking an idea or a concept and make it come alive with vivid images, examples, stories and metaphors is what separates a good from a world-class public speaker. However you also need some knowledge about what you are actually talking about and also have the necessary public speaking skills like structuring an effective speech. Strength = Talent + Knowledge + Skills Talents A talent on the other hand, is something that you are born with. It’s a personal trait or characteristic. It is not an activity that you are good at (that’s a strength). The books defines a talent as “any recurring patterns of thought, behaviour or feeling”. So anything that you do daily, often without being aware of it is a natural talent. Let me give you an example If you are a person that thinks a lot and always analyses what you experience, then this is an ever existing pattern that defines who you are. You may wonder how this can be a talent – well simply because you can apply it productively: For example by getting involved on the front end of projects and initiatives. Maybe you are drawn to strangers and love meeting new people, creating strong connections with them and expanding your network.
