You often hear politicians talk about how we should value and promote hard work. I completely agree. When I grew up, I watched my dad put on his work boots every morning and head out the door to provide for us. Valuing work is a two-way street, it also means that an honest day’s work should come with a fair and honest day’s pay. It means that people that work hard and play by the rules should be able to live a decent life. That’s why I took the lead last year, becoming one of the first to call for Maryland to raise the minimum wage, which I was proud to see happen. I reached out to the business community to hear their concerns and make the pro-business argument, that higher wages would increase demand for their products and improve workplace productivity. In Congress, I’m also a cosponsor of legislation to raise the minimum wage nationwide, which would help millions more across the country. In the past, raising the minimum wage has been a bipartisan issue. And with the federal minimum wage falling to historic lows in terms of purchasing power, it should be again. - John
