You read articles about narcissist parents, and how much damage they do to their children. Image is very important to a narcissist and it was important to my father, and is very important to my Ex, to have perfect children. My memories are flooded by never measuring up: my hair was stringy and didn’t look good, I’d put on weight, I had too many designer clothes so clearly, I was insecure and hiding behind those labels. I wasn’t as smart as my one sister, or as athletic as the other one. These were all statements straight from my father’s mouth. When I was only 16 years old, I took a three-day aptitude test to learn about myself and to discover my innate skill set. I was hopeful that it would provide some direction for “what I wanted to be when I grew up.” The highest recommended career path for me was a lawyer! I was very excited thinking I could solve problems and help people which were/are both important things to me. I vividly remember telling my father this great news upon returning home. I also vividly remember his answer: “No, you are not smart enough to be a lawyer.
