You see, the Bible is, despite the criticism of people who have never read it, the Bible is thoroughly and painfully and brutally realistic: it tells us, in the clearest of terms, that we live in a world filled with temptations and evil. And, in order to survive and thrive in this world of temptations and evil we need leadership so that we can be delivered safely to our destination with God. The goal – both as we follow and when we arrive - is to be with God, here and now partially, given the limits of this world, but ultimately in the fullness and wholeness for which we have been created. That is the purpose of creation, to get us to God. That is the purpose of our birth, to get us to God. That is the purpose of our families and friends and jobs and leisure and faith and education, to get us to God. The alternative is to not get to God, to not be with God, to be completely divorced from a relationship with God, completely unaware of the presence of God, completely unresponsive to the love of God. That is where evil lives and evil actions inevitably emerge from a life that is oblivious to God. - Excerpt from sermon 6/22/14
