You see what had happend was.. On October 1st, 1993 I was just beginning to learn how to type on an actual typewriter, one of the few forward thinking decisions I made during my teens, and no doubt caught up in the ever changing trivial daily personal dramas that defined the high school experience. Cool Runnings was in the theaters, Whoop there it is by Tag Team was at the top of the charts, Home Improvement and Seinfeld were weekly staples of network TV. Meanwhile somewhere in Bristol, Connecticut Stuart Scott was preparing for his first full broadcast on the soon to be launched espn2 later that night. He soon became a regular anchor on SportsCenter in the following years (which was on a continuous 1hr loop throughout the day back then). His unique delivery of commentary during highlights, and subsequent imitations of his catchphrases by sports fans in my generation, became part of the soundtrack of my youth. Had his impact stopped there it would have been a truly memorable one. But it didnt, while deep in a battle with cancer, and having been hospitalized a week prior, Stuart gave an acceptance speech at the ESPYS Ill never forget. It was raw, honest, powerful and a glimpse into his mostly private struggle with a horrible disease; I encourage everyone to watch it if you havent. He showed his deep love for his daughters, and unbelievable courage with his words that night. Those words and seeing now in several tributes to him today how he lived in spite of hardships, will forever be an inspiration and example to me moving forward on how to be a better man. Thank you Stuart, you were even cooler than the other side of the pillow to me, and you will be missed.
