You think being a freelance comic book artist it easy, fun, you get to rest as much as you want, and get loads of money in the process? Think again. Ive been working freelance for the past 4 years (or so). I left my crappy day job to pursue my childhood dream of working as a comic book artist. At first I juggled my 8am-6pm dayjob, 2-3 hours rest / bonding time with my family, then work with comic book projects from 10pm- 4am daily. Yeah I got a lot of money that time but I wasnt in tip top shape due to lack of sleep. So I decided to quit my desk job. So now that I work on comic books full time, you think everything is fine. Nope. Not quite. I look for my own projects because I dont have any agent to market my skills; theres this nagging feeling that if I dont have any projects, how can I pay the bills and feed my family; if I have as many projects on hand, I cant work as fast as I can my clients will start to get pissed off; some clients dont pay on time which pisses you off coz they demand so much of you but cant return the favor when it comes to payment; how can you pay your assistants if you yourself hasnt been paid. The list of problems goes on and on. So now, youre thinking what the heck am I talking about. Well... the point is that if you really love what youre doing, do it passionately and prioritize whats important to you. Spend time with your family as much as possible and maintain your true friends who can help you out through thick and thin. Never quit no matter what happens, live your dream and stay healthy.
