You want a preview of what life will be like for your children? I - TopicsExpress

You want a preview of what life will be like for your children? I can’t tell anyone that because the truth is, despite having more time to reflect upon the deeper aspects of life, I haven’t arrived quite yet. Everyone thinks I’m a wise man, resulting from my obstacles and challenges. I simply joke that I’m a wise guy when I’m still learning so many new things each and every day. No, there is absolutely nothing good about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. However, to say I learned nothing from this disease would be a complete lie. In fact, I’ve learned a number of things throughout the years. One of the greatest lessons is that fighting does not always require a reason. Sometimes you might not know what exactly you’re fighting for, but to keep going, regardless, becomes a necessity that gives you a strong sense of direction. I learned that trying your best is often not good enough. While my lungs were unable to expel the healthy amount of carbon dioxide, I was having much trouble breathing and used my wheelchair tray to leverage a thrusting motion which helped to inhale and exhale. I found encouragement through telling myself to try harder because when a person is pushed to the limit, he will fire back. And I also learned that being alone is really an opportunity to develop our all so important emotional/mental independence. If you solely depend on others in that area, in addition to your physical needs, it’s too easy to lose yourself. You see I’m not that cripple who has to live life to the fullest and make the best of it. This is about getting past the baby steps and walking through adversity. This is about living, because you’re able. DMD has gotten to me on occasion. It has never gotten the best of me.
