Youd better watch out: The coolest Christmas movie ever is on German TV Tele 5 tonight. Tele 5 has carved out a sordid niche for itself amongst German TV networks by proudly boasting of showing The Worst Films of All Time ... But occasionally the programming manager slips up and inadvertently airs an obscure Eurasian film which at first glance looks trashy, but which in fact is a minor masterpiece. Thats the case with the underground cult hit Rare Exports Movie from Finland which won acclaim on the film fest circuit a couple of years ago. Like the Finns themselves, it is charming, melancholy, witty in a very subtle way and yet somehow alarmingly creepy (a talent which Finns have employed for centuries to thwart invaders). And, like the Finns themselves, this film is sadly underrated and unappreciated. Centuries ago ancient Laplanders buried some thing which had been devouring their reindeer ... and their children.
