Youll Never Walk Alone (1956) Youll Never Walk Alone comes from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Carousel, made into a movie in 1956. In this scene, Nettie Fowler (real-life contralto, Claramae Turner), the cousin of the female protagonist Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones), sings Youll Never Walk Alone to comfort and encourage Julie after her husband, Billy Bigelow, the male lead, kills himself to avoid capture during a failed robbery. Apparently the original choice to play Bigelow was Frank Sinatra(!) In the United Kingdom, the songs most successful cover was released by Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1963, after the bands producer George Martin suggested that they record it as a followup to their hit I Like It. It rose to number one in the singles chart and stayed there for four consecutive weeks. The song quickly became the anthem of Liverpool Football Club and is invariably sung by its supporters moments before the start of each home game. The words Youll Never Walk Alone also feature in the club crest and on the Shankly Gate entrance to Anfield, their home stadium. youtu.be/1izigJX1pxI
