In Australia we have government funded broadcasters (ABC, SBS), community broadcasters (C31) and commercial broadcasters (Seven, Nine, Ten, One, Seven Two, Seven Mate, Eleven, Go, Gem, TVSN, Extra, Extra 2, TV4ME, Fresh Ideas TV, Spree TV). Malcolm Turnbull feels we have too many community broadcasters and not enough commercial broadcasters (!!!). He plans to take the broadcast signal away from C31 and make it a sixteenth commercial channel instead. Most people are happy to let him because they dont understand whats going on. Let me address two points here. A lot of people assume community channels receive government funding ala ABC or SBS - they dont. A lot of people think C31 would have an easy time switching to broadcasting on the internet - not even a Seven or a Nine or a Ten could pull that off in fifteen months and youll notice none of them are in a rush to try.
