Young Indian mountaineers scale Mt Elbrus On July 24, a four member Indian team of mountaineers scaled Mt Elbrus, Europe’s highest mountain peak (5672 metres). The team comprised of Arunima Sinha , Akriti Heer, Saachi Soni and Om Prakash. Arunima Sinha acquired international recognition in May 2013, when she became the first woman amputee in the world to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. Hers is a story of guts and determination. After being thrown out of a train in 2011 (while resisting the actions of some miscreants), one of her legs had to be amputated. Undeterred by this huge setback, she trained in mountaineering with a prosthetic limb and decided she would scale the highest peaks of the seven continents of the world: Mounts Everest, Kilinmanjaro, Elbrus, Aconcagua, Denali, Cartensz Pyramid and Vinson. More on Arunima can be seen at youtube/watch?v=BEOKdCtyr64 and youtube/watch?v=gM3JbSOSOdE After conquering Mount Everest in May 2013, she went on to scale Mount Kilimanjaro in May 2014 and now Mount Elbrus. With Arunima on the Mount Elbrus expedition were her Manager Om Prakash, Akriti Heer [20] – probably the youngest Indian to conquer Mount Elbrus and Saachi Soni a final year undergraduate student from IP College of Delhi University. The team visited the Embassy of India Moscow on July 26 before returning to India. We wish them success in their further ambitions.
