Young defender Jon Flanagan experienced emotions at both ends of the spectrum on Saturday evening. Handed a first start for Liverpool in almost a year due to Glen Johnsons absence against Arsenal, the 20-year-old was naturally delighted to be back in the first-team fold. His joy was tempered, though, by a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium which denied the Reds top spot in the Barclays Premier League. Flanagan told the Liverpool Echo: It was great to be back in the team and get the chance to play, but it would have been more enjoyable if we had got a decent result. I only found out I was playing a couple of hours before kick-off. The manager told me I was starting and I just had to make sure I was ready. It had been a long time since I last played in the Premier League. There were a few nerves but once the game started I was just focused on getting into the game and doing my job for the team. I played in the game at the Emirates a couple of years ago so I knew what to expect. I felt like I did okay but, to be honest, it was all about the result and we were all frustrated by the defeat. Since making his senior debut for the club in April 2011, the right-back has made a total of 18 appearances for the Reds. Flanagan is now hoping to build on his return at the weekend, but will also keep his options open regarding the next stage of his development. I had a tough time with injuries but hopefully thats all behind me now, the No.38 added. Ive just been training hard, giving 100 per cent and trying to force my way into the managers plans. Hopefully I can get another chance and keep showing what I can do. If I dont get another chance then a loan is certainly a possibility. Everyone wants to play games.
