Young players from across the Manning Valley and the Great Lakes had their weekly dose of basketball yesterday morning at Saxbys Stadium, Taree and as usual the fun and excitement levels were high. The six teams in the mixed year 3/4 competition provide the bulk of children playing in the Saturday morning primary school competition and although the games sometimes produce big margins this group will be the basis of future competitions and the experience they are gaining now will lead to very good play in the years ahead as their fundamental skills improve. Winners yesterday were St Josephs Raptors, Taree West Champs and St Josephs Superstrikers with Kyle Cochrane, Ty Croke, Cooper Ward, Navren Willett, Jaryd Mitchell, Alisha Lyons and Donjai Paulson all playing well for their respective teams. The girls year 5/6 competition has St Josephs Titaniums leading the way and their clash yesterday with St Josephs Lakers was a hard fought one which produced a very exciting win 30-26. Hope Extrem was the difference between the two teams and her 18 points pushed Titaniums to the win. Taree West Chargers also played well for a 21-14 win over St Josephs Slamdunks with Ayeiesha Griffis and Aleah Ladmore making valuable contributions. Wingham Red is the team to beat in the boys year 5/6 competition as they rattled up their 7th win from as many games with an impressive 52-10 performance at the expense of Manning Magic. Nash Atkins with 20 points and Harry Lewis with 16 points were in sparkling form and provided plenty of headaches for their opponents defence. Their main rivals for the crown, St Josephs Magic and St Josephs Taipans also played well to return solid wins, Magic up by 15 over Taree West Chargers and Taipans just home against Wingham Blue 34 to 26. Basketball, everyones game at Saxbys Stadium, Taree where 100+ children enjoy this great game each Saturday morning. The next competition will be played in term one 2014 and now is the time for schools to start planning their participation. H
