Young unemployed being prevented from taking Christmas jobs ....Crazy Stuff Fears over Christmas jobs for young unemployed 1 November 2013 “Unemployed young people are afraid to take up temporary Christmas jobs because of changes in the recent budget made by the Fine Gael / Labour government according to Sinn Fein Cllr Maurice Quinlivan. He said that a number of young unemployed young people have approached him over fears that they may end up loosing €88 per week after their temporary Christmas Employment ends. I have checked this out and incredibly, this will apply in many cases. This is a crazy situation. We should be encouraging people to take up employment rather than putting barriers in their way. Young unemployed people who have to start new claims will be heavily penalised. What kind of country have the Fine Gael/Labour government created where people are afraid to take up employment”. One unemployed 24 year old man who called to my clinic today had received a job offer starting next week through the Christmas period and until late January. He was delighted as he has been unemployed for over twelve months and was planning to emigrate. However on checking with the local Social Welfare Department he was shocked to learn that when he finishes this temporary work placement he would have to make a fresh social welfare claim. He has been told that if he goes back on social welfare his social welfare payment of €188 which is paid to him now will be cut to €100 under the new cuts in Budget 2014 as he is under 25 years old. Clearly in all probability he will be returning to unemployment as this is a seasonal job and 50% of young males in Limerick city are unemployed.” This is a crazy situation which will clearly prevent many young unemployed people from taking seasonal jobs as they traditionally have done because the potential cuts to their subsequent welfare payments means they are simply unable to take the job on offer. This Government claimed that these cuts to welfare will lead young people into work, Here is a clear case of where the reverse is true. Críoch
