Your Child Can Go To Harvard - For FREE Most of you know that I write a blog for China Daily, the largest English language newspaper in Asia with more than 1 million papers printed every day. I also get my blogs printed in the physical newspaper about 2-8 times a month. I always know when one has been printed. My cellphone dings and I get a message from my bank that China Daily just sent me some money. The following is one that will be in the print edition soon. This is vital information for anyone, but especially, Chinese parents. Background Chinese parents begin thinking about their childs college education the moment the child is born. They save for it and plan for it. They enroll their kids in English training in Elementary School. They hire tutors also at this age. They are serious about their childs education. And children learn that long hours in schools, with tutors, training schools and ample homework is just a way of life. They dont have a clue how American kids live. They are far more disciplined than you can imagine. They shoot for schools like Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, MIT and other top 50 colleges/universities. They are often lied to and cheated out of some of their money by so-called education consultants who promise them admission to top schools regardless of the ability, grades, SAT scores and past performance of the child. All they tell them is that if they have enough money, they can make it happen. This is how it works in China and they assume that Americans are the same. Article/Blog Your Child Can Go To Harvard - For FREE There are many misconceptions and wrong ideas about paying for education in the West by most people in China. In China, education is largely about money and gaokao scores. In the U.S., it is quite different. Ive talked to several administrators of international high schools here in China who still wrongly believe and instruct their students NOT to apply for financial aid when applying for admissions in a western school. They tell students that if they do that, then, they will likely not be accepted. THIS IS TOTALLY FALSE. Wrong information. Harvard College sets the standard for most universities in the USA simply because it is consistently ranked number 1 in the world. Most colleges and universities follow Harvards lead. What most Chinese parents dont know is, Harvard does not discriminate regarding the home country of an applicant. Harvard is interested in attracting the best students in the world. The USA is a melting pot of people. Though many people disagree with their politics (and government), education at a college level is focused upon the highest quality of education. Heres a few facts about Harvard (and the majority of other colleges and universities in the USA). 1. Harvard doesnt care about your country of origin. They have no quotas that they must meet. They are a private school. They dont have to meet quotas by government demand. 2. Special relationships will not get you into Harvard (or, as I said before, most other schools). Special relationships (guanxi) is a dominant factor in China. It is not in the USA. Im not saying that it doesnt exist in the USA, but, it has very little to do with getting your child into a top school. In fact, Harvard states on their website that the only priority that might be considered regarding special relationships would be children of Harvard alumni. And the only privilege they will enjoy is that if a Harvard alumni has a child who has applied there and been rejected. At the request of the parent, Harvard will review their application a second time. Again, they only promise to review it again. A primary reason why most Chinese parents want to send their child to a school in the USA is because they know that the school can be trusted (and has the reputation) of being the highest quality education in the world. Even if you have special relationships at Harvard, they will likely do you no good. Harvard wants excellent students and will not compromise based on any other factor. 3. Harvard doesnt care about how much money you have. They care how smart your child is. Harvard is biased in who they do and dont accept. Their bias isnt how rich you are or how much money you have or, as I said above, special relationships. They are biased regarding how smart your child is. It is their only bias and you can rest assured that they do care about that. On Harvards website, they state directly that if your family income is less than $65,000 USD, then you will pay $0 for your childs education. That is, in China, if your family makes less than 390,000 RMB a year, you will pay nothing for your child to attend Harvard if they qualify academically. Now, if your family income is 400,000 RMB, you wont pay full tuition. It is on a sliding scale. A students family that makes 450,000 RMB (for example) still wouldnt pay a lot for their child to go there. Harvard has an endowment of $32 billion. They dont need your money. They go on to say that 90% of all students (who arent on a full scholarship) there pay about the same as a state school in the USA. That is less than half of Harvards full tuition. So how does Harvard get so much money? Well, the answer is simple. They get massive donations from wealthy people. They get scholarships funded by huge and wealthy corporations. The sum of perhaps $40,000 or $50,000 a year to go there is nothing compared to the money they get from wealthy donors. They work on their reputation of being and staying the top school in the world and then, wealthy corporations and people donate money to them. Thats how it works. I want to lay to rest a lot of misconceptions about sending your child to a Western school (not just Harvard). If you have any questions that I can help you with, please contact me here on CD in a private message. If I dont know the answer, I will do what I can to research the answer for you. Please also know that I dont work for Harvard or any other college/university in the West. I have worked with one in the USA, but I dont now. I am passionate about helping everyone that I can to get what they want regarding their childs education. I have taken 4 screenshots directly from Harvards website (https://college.harvard.edu/admissions/application-process/international-applicants) and posted them here as pictures.
