Your Friday PSA: Chicken bones and cats dont mix! Exciting evening at Tinykittens HQ! I got a call that a pregnant cat had been brought in to LAPS, and that she might be in labor. We had some concerns, so off we went to Mountain View Veterinary Hospital. It turns out adorable little Dora was so hungry she had eaten a massive quantity of chicken bones, and the kitten-sized lumps and kitten elbows we thought we felt were actually her giant stomach filled with bone fragments. Chicken bones are very dangerous for cats because they splinter and can easily pierce the stomach or intestines, so it is important to NEVER feed your cat chicken bones. So far, Dora is bright and active, with a normal temperature, so there is a chance she might be extremely lucky and be able to pass the bones. If not, she will need emergency surgery. She is back at LAPS for monitoring and treatment. Even though shes probably only six months old, she has clearly had kittens recently. Based on her condition and milk supply, we think she had them long enough ago that they are self sufficient by now. Here are pics of this super-sweet tiny kitten and her chicken belly.
