Your Royal Highnesses, Distinguished Guests, Athletes and Officials, People of Scotland and Citizens of the Commonwealth… The Commonwealth Games are known as the Friendly Games. Glasgow has succeeded in making them even more than that. These have truly been the People’s Games. Scotland, you have welcomed the athletes of the Commonwealth and you have contributed to them realizing their dreams on one of the world’s great sporting stages. We have witnessed superb sporting action, supported by fantastic organisation, made possible through the invaluable efforts of the thousands of volunteers who for many will provide their lasting impression of this city and Scotland’s people. Thank you Clyde-siders – you have been amazing. The Games are about the athletes. These Games had athletes and sport as their central focus. All Games partners worked together to provide them everything they needed to compete at their very best – and we were not disappointed, so thank you athletes for your inspiring performances. To Team Scotland, I say, a job well done. Your record medal haul has done your country, our hosts, proud. The generous support of our partnership with Unicef and Glasgow 2014 has raised a magnificent £5million, which is already transforming lives. Thank you! In closing, I thank the Organising Committee, our friends at Commonwealth Games Scotland, the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council for their dedication, support and hard work which have been vital to the success of these Games in Glasgow. The Games have made us all very proud and truly brought our family together. Scotland, Glasgow, you really have delivered in every aspect the best Games ever. I hope you enjoy tonight’s Closing Ceremony, as we say farewell until we all meet once more on the Gold Coast, Australia, in 2018.
