Your final appearance before your people Among shards strewn with snow. But — without your word, without your voice. Only your chilled breath... (—Peretz Markish, translated by Chana Kronfeld) Yiddish poet Peretz Markish wrote these words in memory of the celebrated Yiddish theater personality and anti-fascist activist Shloyme Mikhoels, who was executed on the night of January 12, 1948 in Minsk on Stalins direct orders. Mikhoelss murder was covered up to look like a traffic accident, and thousands, including his friend and collaborator Markish, attended his funeral in Moscow. Celebrate the life of this artistic visionary who (literally) played a central role in the flowering of Yiddish drama in the Soviet Union and chaired the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee.
