Your first memory probably takes place after your third birthday. Scientists didn’t understand the reason for this “infantile amnesia” until recently, but new research shows that it may be related to amazing rate at which our brains grow and change in the first years of life. At that age, new neurons are being created so quickly in the hippocampus (a brain region involved in turning experiences into long-term memories) that you may lose track of where those early memories are stored.
