Day 11 of Christmas and we are almost at the end of our journey through the back catalogue. I hope you have enjoyed the ride. I cant go into too much detail about the inspiration behind this song out of respect to the person involved, but lets just say it was some heart-wrenching news that led to its creation. It was recorded at a student-based recording studio in Camden Town, London. We had limited time to finish the record and unfortunately it was never finished. This is why the main vocal is so buried in the mix and barely audible at times. Its disappointing as it was a very significant piece to me. The structure was also largely inspired by James Joyces piece of literature: Finnegans Wake in that all conventional song structure is abandoned. It is entirely a stream of consciousness. There are no verses or choruses, just one flowing tide which goes full circle and ends where it began. This reflects the endless cycles of self-torment I was going through. Ultimately I believe you can start and end the piece at any point and it maintains its function as a piece. In truth there really is no beginning and no end. The very final chorus of Stay Strong... involved the entire band coming into the vocal booth to sing along. Which gives it that sense of collective outpouring and I find lends weight to the emotion.
