Your team at The Canadian Fencing Academy is proud to announce that they are welcoming Hans Wolfgramm. Here is a BIO from Hanns: I began fencing in Singapore when I was 8. When I arrived in Canada I joined Ryerson fencing club where I took lessons with Josef Mirkin for the first few. As I became more competitive I began attending training camps where I had opportunities to fence with top level North American and European fencers. But without having access to a single high level coach consistently, I had to practice with many different coaches. I developed a close relationship with Hungarian fencing coach and former Danish national team coach, Ferenc Toth, as well as Paul Apsimon and Peter Ho. This practice forced me to think about technique, strategy, and coaching styles earlier than I would have otherwise since I had to figure out how to absorb the best parts of each different style. I was a member of the cadet national team, and my top results include 2nd place at JMF at nationals, a top 8 at a junior world cup, team silver and individual bronze at Canada games. My results are not as impressive as they probably could have been. Despite having lots of potential, my mental game was very weak and I was wildly inconsistent. I also began suffering from serious lower back and knee problems. These mental and physical issues are ultimately what led me away from fencing towards yoga, and kalaripayat, a martial art from India. I picked these practices specifically to fix my back and train my weaknesses in focus and flexibility. I have spent the last 6 years training in kalaripayat with some of the top teachers in the world. I have been funded to train by the Ontario Arts Council twice, as well as a year long fellowship by the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. After these last 6 years I have learned things I wish I had known as an a fencer, which is one of my motivations for coaching - to share these things with young fencers when they need it. I have extensive experience instructing both kalari and fencing. I have taught kalari through IMPACT, a not for profit arts organization dedicated to working with youth in under-served communities. Through IMPACT I have led kalari workshops in schools and community centers in Malvern, Regent Park, and Rexdale, as well as a solvent abuse treatment centre in Thunder Bay. I have coached beginners fencing classes, and summer fencing camps at private schools around the city through TFC, as well as 6 weeks of summer fencing camps for U of T working side by side with Josh. Josh has long been a close friend, but it was during these fencing camps working together that we developed a strong working/coaching relationship. My strengths as a coach are working on fundamentals of form and technique, as well as body awareness, efficient movement, and mental focus, so that fencers will be in an ideal state to progress quickly through the basics absorb as much as possible from their lessons with senior coaches like Josh and Alice. Hans will be giving private lessons and also running Pay-Per-Visit classes on Saturday afternoon. If you are interested in either private lessons with Hans ($25 per half hour) or the PPV classes ($5) please contact your coach or Kyle.
