Youre fooling yourself if you think we live in a post-racial society and that progressives are just getting mileage out of the race card. People from the Jim Crow Era are still alive and well. Do you really think things have changed all that much? On paper, perhaps things have changed, but I grew up in the heart of the Bible-thumping, racist, homophobic South and experienced subsequent generations not so different from the households that raised them. Its why vitriolic backlash against progressive policies are able to gain traction and overt xenophobic attitudes toward immigrants are acceptable in our politics. The election of a black president did not symbolize the end of a racially divided America. Conservatives will argue that race relations have gotten worse under the Obama Administration because of the Obama Administration, but I argue that race relations have gotten worse mostly because of a backlash against progressive policies and because of a take back America and return to American values mentality by conservatives, within which is embedded nuanced racism and a system that works against the socioeconomically disadvantaged. Conservatives want to play by the rules and the rule of law when it favors them, but thats beginning to slip away, and our society is beginning to see symptoms of it. #Ferguson is a microcosm of tensions felt across the United States. The death of Michael Brown was the spark of a ticking time-bomb.
