Libraries in Massachusetts needed assistance in meeting short-term staffing needs, while library workers wanted opportunities to earn income, gain experience, and stay connected to the field during unemployment or retirement. The Massachusetts Library System recognized a potential solution that could also generate additional revenue for the collaborative: a temporary library staffing service. This session will explain the process of launching BiblioTemps® as a successful statewide initiative; describe specific benefits to client libraries, staff, and the collaborative; and share observations about the library work force from the first two years of operation. The webinar is aimed at librarians, library managers and Library Directors wishing to explore the alternative options in fulfilling the sector’s staff issues without compromising the service. The objectives of this Webinar are to:- • Explain how a short-term library staffing service can benefit libraries, library staff, and a library consortium; • Identify the necessary resources and key issues to consider when exploring whether to start a library staffing service; • Describe how information learned from operating a short-term library staffing service might help identify and address LIS workforce issues. About the presenter Kelly Jo Woodside is the manager of BiblioTemps and an advisor for the Massachusetts Library System in Marlborough, MA. She recruits and places short-term library staff at all levels in multi-type libraries throughout the state, as well as provides consultation and continuing education on a range of library issues. Woodside earned her master’s degree in library and information science from Simmons College in Boston, MA, where she later worked as Career Resource Librarian and taught the continuing education course “Revitalize Your LIS Career.” In 2007, she helped found the Conference Career Center for the Massachusetts Library Association and coordinated it for several years. She has also served as Information Literacy Librarian at Simmons and Head of Reference and Information Literacy Services at Assumption College in Worcester, MA.
