Youth Police Initiative Mary Vasquez and staff congratulation! For having the vision to collaborate with the Americans And Bringing the YPI to Belize as a form of intervention Coupled with the training on mediation You’ve touched so many lives you may not understand This program is opening the youths’ eyes We have a cadre of youth who can now testify These programs saved lives; you have answered our mother’s cries There is no reason why more of our youths have to die We all know that this gang business is a lie This program needs to be rolled out country wide We need more parental consent Call Restore Belize and ask them how your child can get involvement Creating a safe space, For Police and Belizean youth to meet face to face To learn and to interface and most importantly to communicate But the key to it all is to create that safe space Most youth understand that the police represent the state But they are deemed adversaries not having an opportunity to communicate The youth speak a different language Some are not literate and are at a disadvantage They learn it from movies, lyrics and songs and recode the language Hailing from predatory neighborhoods that gang members hold hostage Due to this adolescent youth are impulsive Then again due to training Police are aggressive Both of them are acting on the information that is stereotyped and prejudiced What YPI does is have them listen to each others’ stories Find common ground and be supportive This training is indeed intensive It requires collaboration from multiple agencies And takes officers out of their comfort zone and force them to be reflective Of their upbringing and times when they made blunders And take them back to a time when they were teenagers Trying to find themselves in this world of adventure Having focus on the event that was their life changer And sharing it with the youth so they can make better choices for their future Police men becomes mentors, big brothers and advisors This program if rolled out to all districts will be a sure crime stopper I hereby call on the Rotary, Pickwick Clubs to be an investor I hereby call on all Business owners to invents and become trend setters I can say this program will work because I’ve seen the results over and over Fear is what motivates both the youngsters and the police officers Youths without education, guidance nor structure most of whom are victims of trauma Will turn to the street to find the family and structure they long for I call on the Education and National Security Ministers Let’s address crime at the core this is a viable platform Let’s save the wannabes before they become crime associates or hard core There’s a need to reach at risk youth before they come knocking at your door By: Abdulmajeed K Nunez
