Youth body wants thousands of young people in green economy The South African Youth Council (SAYC) is driving a programme to get thousands of young people employed in the green economy. SAYC President Thulani Tshefuta said on Wednesday that they are busy meeting with the government to ensure that the youth benefits from the green economy. Tshefuta was speaking ahead of the green economy summit the SAYC is hosting in Cape Town at the end of the month. The summit will be addressed by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa and bosses of parastatals. The youth council wants to pull in various stakeholders in the green economy to create sustainable livehoods. However, the SAYC was also very much involved in getting the youth employed in the green economy. Tshefuta said the council was the lead youth sector signatory to the Youth Employment Accord that was signed with the government, business and labour in April. The SAYC wants 100% of jobs in the installation of solar water geysers be given to the youth. The council also wants 60% of all jobs across the green economy be given to young people, said Tshefuta. “We want commitments in the Youth Employment Accord to find expression in the green economy,” said the youth council leader. He added that they will soon be signing an agreement with the water and energy sector to provide the youth with jobs. Last week Tshefuta and other leaders of the SAYC met with Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel to look at the number of jobs that could be created in the green economy. The council is having another meeting with economic development department director-general Jenny Schreiner today (thur) to look at the exact number of jobs that would be created for the youth across the green economy. The Cape Town summit would be a platform for the youth council and other stakeholders to use opportunities in the green economy towards sustainable livehoods.
