Youth forum on positive attitudes held Africa » Gambia Thursday, August 22, 2013 The National Youth Council (NYC) on Tuesday held a one-day forum with youth leaders in Kombo North on the promotion of positive attitudes and behavioral change among young people in the country. The forum, which was held at the President’s Award International conference hall in Bakau, centred on the theme ‘Responsible citizenship’. In declaring the forum open, the deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malang Jassy, said positive behavioral change among the youths of the country would lead to development. He said it is the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to help young people change their attitude. Jassey said the Gambian population mainly comprises of young people and stressed the need for concerted efforts to help the youths of country. The deputy permanent secretary noted that the forum is in line with his Ministry’s desire to help young people become better citizens and urged participants to make better use of the forum. A representative from the Ministry of Trade, Mamadi Dampha, described young people as the cream of the society, thus the need for them to champion courses aimed at improving the communities in which they lived. He said young people form the core of the country’s human resource base, hence the need to provide them opportunities to articulate their needs and aspirations. Commenting on the theme, he said responsible citizens always strive to promote both personal and public good in their respective communities. He noted that citizens demonstrate individual responsibility by employing appropriate strategies to resolve conflicts, uphold integrity and dependability, as well as recognize how individual choice and action affects self, family and community. In his welcoming remarks, the acting executive secretary of the National Youth Council, Abubacarr Saho, said the forum was geared towards promoting attitudinal change among young people. He noted that the country could not move forward without the full participation of the youthful population. Saho further called for the fullest participation of youths in the fishing and agricultural sectors citing the numerous opportunities and the eanbling environment created by the Government of the Gambia under the leadership of President Jammeh . The NYC executive secretary thanked the United Nation Development Project (UNDP) for funding the forum. Other speakers include; Jenery Sanyang from UNISEF and Sutay Jawo of NYSS. They all dilated on the importance of attitudinal change among young people. Roslyn Secka chaired the ceremony. Author: Modou Kanteh
