YouthBuild students, graduates, staff, board members and volunteers are proud to join with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and all of our beloved colleagues in the national service movement to celebrate TWENTY YEARS OF AMERICORPS! Twenty years ago tomorrow, September 12th, the first class of AmeriCorps members, 20,000 strong, were sworn in to begin serving in more than 1,000 communities. That number has grown to 800,000 members in 15,000 service locations! It’s also the 20th anniversary of YouthBuild AmeriCorps, which began under the sponsorship of YouthBuild USA through the National Direct program at CNCS. Through YouthBuild AmeriCorps, 20,000 members have contributed to a history of community service by serving almost 12 million hours building over 5,000 units of affordable housing in 150 rural and urban communities across the country. On this auspicious day, we encourage you to: • Learn more about YouthBuild AmeriCorps by downloading this special edition of the YouthBuild Bulletin. • Watch this short video and gain a deeper understanding of what “service” means to YouthBuild AmeriCorps members and how it can change the trajectory of their lives. • Tune in live to the White House 20th Anniversary celebration at 11:30AM EST on September 12th. Joining President Obama on stage will be Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and George H.W. Bush. You may also spot YouthBuild USA Founder and CEO Dorothy Stoneman and five YouthBuild AmeriCorps students from Sasha Bruce YouthBuild who were invited to be on stage. • Read the study by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice which concluded that the YouthBuild AmeriCorps model of service “engages young people in ways that enhances their self-confidence, helps them to see themselves as being able to help others, and increases their sense of connection to their communities.” There are so many ways to join tomorrows celebration. Visit servicenation.org to find out more and follow along on social media through #AmeriCorps20.
