Youve heard of the ex-Muslim phenomenon? It goes something like this: A former Muslim, who is now a Christian or atheist(these are the usual conversions) begins with I used to be Muslim....I am an expert on Islam. We laugh these people out of the room every time, but the former Christian, former atheist, now Muslim is suddenly an expert on Islam? We take his speech without researching what he is upon, what he believes vis avis Islam, who he studied with? Do people actually use the Quran and Sunnah and calling to Tawheed and the Sunnah and warning from bidah and shirk as dawah anymore? Do people actually realize just who is the turner of hearts? A former Muslim may say that he read the Bible and experienced the love of Jesus. A former Christian may say I read the Quran and everything became clear. Why do you believe in this type of subjectivism when you agree with the one converting, but dismiss it offhand when you disagree with the one converting? The Quran answers and demolishes the objections and false beliefs of every single type of disbeliever, but we rarely quote from it, we use this comparative religion technique, this my god is better than your god, my religion is better than your religion nonsense. And we rarely mention the `Ulema or connect the people with them. Maybe if we were more sincere, instead of trying to look like the hero who gets people to convert en masse, less people would enter Islam via one of the destroyed 72 sects. Have you ever seen my conversion story? Nope. Why, because its subjective. Im not trying to use emotional arguments to get converts. I used to be a Christian myself, from a family of ministers, and I can tell you that 99% of the arguments the reverts who are now propped up as duaat and speakers use are weak, baseless and betray a fundamental lack of understanding of Christianity. So you get people using that Ahmed Deedat, Yusef Estes style of dawah debating with the disbelievers(which we shouldnt even be doing anyway) using straw men. I want people to be Muslim because its the Haqq, not because someone with a beautiful conversion story moved you, even though I dont doubt the efficacy of some of these stories, people have the tendency to take as their shaykh the person who brought them into Islam. The point being, being an adherent of a religion does not automatically make you an expert in the religion. So call the people to Allah according to your ability, which means according to your knowledge, knowing when to stay in your lane and not being afraid to say I dont know. And always remember that a great form of dawah is your character and manners, your kindness that is genuine but does not compromise or water down the Deen for anyone. Islam is the Truth, every other way other than Deen of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger is falsehood. And Allah is the turner of hearts. Barak Allahu Feekum.
