Youve probably noticed some of your friends are posting the Facebook copyright claim on their timelines, but its actually a hoax! Read on for more information and SHARE with your friends. A fake and unnecessary copyright claim has again found itself in the timelines of many Facebook users. People on the social media site may have seen posts claiming to be legal notices that protect the users rights on personal content. There are multiple versions, but they all state that written consent is needed before anyone can use pictures, videos, writings and anything else someone posted. Those who read this text can do a copy/paste on their Facebook wall, one post states. This will allow them to place themselves under the protection of copyright. However, Facebook has not claimed ownership of everyones pictures, according to its terms. It says all the content and information posted is owned by the user. How photos and content are shared can be controlled through the privacy and application settings. Based on those settings, Facebook states that it can use content royalty-free. The policy is not new, but the legal notices may have come back in response to changes that will take effect Jan. 30. Most of the update is Facebooks attempt to clarify and shorten its privacy policy to make it understandable. Facebook made those changes public in November via email, along with a tool called Privacy Basics to help people navigate their profile settings. The copyright claim posts first appeared in 2012, in response to similar rumors about ownership of intellectual property. According to Snopes, Facebook users cannot retroactively cancel the terms they agreed to when they first signed up.
