Youve seen the strikingly realistic figures on the museums Last 100 Yards ramp and in some of the galleries, but did you know those figures were cast from actual Army Soldiers? When the museum was under construction, artists at Studio EIS in Brooklyn recruited several dozen active duty Soldiers to pose for the various figures. The Soldiers heads, bodies and limbs were wrapped in plaster, and the resulting casts look just like the models. Earlier this month, the NIM welcomed one of those models, SSG Jeffery Fletcher, and his family to the museum. SSG Fletcher recently was reassigned to Fort Benning, and his family traveled here from Michigan to visit. It was their first chance to see Jefferys cast figure on display. It is in a diorama recreating the scene of a TOW missile attack on Saddam Hussein’s forces in Mosul, Iraq in July 2003. It includes an actual Humvee-mounted TOW missile and four life-size cast figures. SSG Fletcher had been with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, recovering from serious combat injuries, when he was asked to pose for the display. Having been a gunner in a unit that used TOW missiles, the assignment was appropriate. SSG Fletcher says hes proud to represent the Soldiers who accomplished a critical mission in the War on Terrorism. And we appreciate SSG Fletcher for his own legacy of service and sacrifice!
