You’re getting married? Congratulations! You are entering what will hopefully be a lifetime commitment – a whole new world. You’ll be going through times of great joy and great sadness, hard times and good times – times when you’d like to give it all up, and more times when you will be glad you didn’t. Commitment – such a strong word, and one that applies to so many different areas in life. Like the one you make to the cat you bring home, the cat you agree to love through those good AND bad times… (oh of course, they are MOSTLY good!). But – what do you do when your spouse-to-be says “get rid of the cat”? It will probably shock people to hear this is a VERY common occurrence. Take the woman who called one of our rescuers and asked her to find a home for the husband’s 11 year old cat. You see, they married a short time ago, now had a baby, and the wife thought the cat was dirty and didn’t want her around the baby… When the rescuer pointed out it was going to be hard to find a home for an 11 year old cat, the woman said “oh it shouldn’t be hard – she’s a nice cat, and has never been sick at all, she should get a home easily”. No, she was told – it won’t be easy, and that is because your husband had her all during her young healthy years. Now, entering her senior years, is when the problems can start. “What does your husband think?” she was asked. Oh, she replied – “he doesn’t want to get rid of her, but we just can’t keep her.” Wow. Commitment. It is not just a word, it is an action. While no one else can be in your life, can know what YOU are going through, really think about this – because if your life partner will ask you to throw away another being, simply because S/HE doesn’t want it, you have some issues to discuss. You enter marriage with the intent of a lifetime; you SHOULD enter animal adoption with that same intent. Take time to really look at life – because how you begin your life together will have repercussions lasting… a lifetime. Talk it out before you get married – that is the smartest plan of all. Commitment. A truly beautiful word.
