“You’ve got to earn my trust!” Nothing is further from the truth. Countless relationships have been ruined and Christ grieved by folks who insist that worthiness be proven. The spiritual reality is much deeper and complex. Trust will always be broken, in great or small ways, in all kinds of relationships. We humans have broken trust with God in the abuse of creation and in warring among ourselves. God did not wait for repentance, to see if we could clean up our act before offering himself to us and opening the way of salvation. The awful truth, the heart breaking reality is that when we have been hurt by someone and trust is broken, we are the only one who can initiate reconciliation. No amount of changed behavior nor expressions of remorse by the other can bring healing, only a change of our own heart. That is what we call “grace” and living in grace is a heroic way of life.
