Yr7 Face Reality Check at Wilnecote Following the year 7 - TopicsExpress

Yr7 Face Reality Check at Wilnecote Following the year 7 football teams success against Smithswood in the ESFA Cup earlier this week, it was with high levels of confidence that the boys journeyed across town to face their rivals in their first league fixture. However, it was with a little trepidation that I prepared for the game. Mrs Cartwright in the Rawlett Finance Office, had announced that her son attended Wilnecote and was in their football team. Having thoroughly interrogated her on formations, tactics and players to watch, I realised we could be in trouble……. My fears came to pass as the Wilnecote boys gave a lesson in high quality football. They played with pace, enthusiasm and great skill and were 2-0 up within 15 minutes. Rawlett were second best in every challenge, seemed to lack desire and to be honest could not compete with the opposition anywhere across the field. The only shining light was goalkeeper……… who made a number of crucial saves, was dominant and brave against the onslaught and showed the kind of mongrel spirit required to be successful in sport. After expressing my dismay at what I was seeing the boys rallied around and I am pleased that the second half performance was much improved. There was more snap in the tackle, a greater effort to close down space and in fact there were some half chances that could have changed the course of the game. Centre halves Parkes and ……….proved harder to negotiate, Golder and…….worked much harder in midfield and started to create some space to launch the counter attack. As Mrs Cartwright made her way over to watch the game my claim to be 4-0 up was not taken very seriously. Indeed one has to give credit to Wilnecote who were far superior in all aspects of the game. In actuality for Rawlett not to concede in the second half was somewhat of a moral victory. Wilnecote have certainly set the benchmark and the return fixture in the new year will provide the barometer of how the Rawlett team has progaressed. There is a lot of hard work ahead and some self reflection to be done. The game itself was played in a great spirit with both sets of boys a credit to their respective schools. Final Result: Wilnecote 3 – 0 Rawlett
