Ysterday at a class of English literature, students were studying - TopicsExpress

Ysterday at a class of English literature, students were studying the Quran. They were asked to compare the stories of the Quran and the Old Testament. It was fascinating to hear the discussion. All of them were non-Muslims. They didnot know Arabic, yet the questions they posed were reflective of their critical thinking. I wish Muslim students can also ask similar questions without being intimidated. One question was this: Does the Quran make a distinction between the material and the spiritual world and give one preference over the other? What after all the foundations of the physical world and who laid the foundations? I have heard Muslims giving a quick verdict on these issues, quoting one verse or a hadith in support of their argument. What is generally lacking in discussion is an objective discussion on how to effectively deal with mateiral and spiritualism within a universal framework creating a balance between human creativity and divine guidance.
