Yuba-Sutter is now on the map; the USA Road Trips Map, that is! Check out this feature in Food & Travel Quarterly Magazine Summer 2014 edition; available on newsstands now. Our team at Grafix Marketing & Design had the opportunity to oversee this project for Visit Yuba Sutter (Yuba-Sutter Tourism), on behalf of the our local Yuba Sutter Chamber of Commerce. Our job was to coordinate the article writing/editing, and design the accompanying advertisement. Were really pleased with the outcome of the feature. Since the attachment is a low resolution JPEG and unreadable for the most part, below weve included the advertorial so you can read. Enjoy! Wine. Dine. Discover. Yuba-Sutter—the Gateway to All Things Northern California by Rose Godfrey Rich in history, cultural diversity, and agriculture, and blessed with natural waterways along the Pacific Flyway, California’s Yuba and Sutter counties beckon visitors to come and explore this crown jewel of the Golden State. Several small towns make up what is collectively known as the Yuba-Sutter area, nestled in the fertile Sacramento Valley at the base of the Sierra Nevada foothills. This region, shaped by a series of migrations through history, offers outdoor enthusiasts something to do in every season. Each Memorial Day weekend, legendary cowboy Cotton Rosser and his Flying U Rodeo bring the Marysville Stampede to town. The traditional rodeo caps off the weekend that begins with a cattle drive through the heart of town, recreating a bit of the old West. Great food and wine are essential to any celebration, and the Yuba-Sutter region’s bountiful harvests provide plenty of opportunities to appreciate the tastes of the valley at farmers markets, festivals, and farm-to-fork events scheduled throughout the year. Every October, Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm in Wheatland welcomes visitors of all ages. You can easily spend a full day with the family at the farm. Make sure to walk out into the fields to pick a pumpkin, find your way through the corn maze, and don’t forget to sample a warm apple dumpling or some of Mrs. B’s delicious walnut pie. Taking a bite of a fresh California peach is like tasting a little slice of juicy sunshine. Peaches take center stage at festivals on each side of the river honoring the luscious summertime fruit. The Marysville Peach Festival is held the third weekend in July when the summertime heat concentrates the sweetness in the fruit. In September, the Live Oak Peach Festival provides the chance to enjoy early fall peaches fresh and cooked into cobblers and other festival favorites. Nature lovers migrate to the Yuba-Sutter each year to observe the many birds that inhabit the area. Because of the area’s strategic location along the Pacific Flyway, millions of migratory birds come through the area, making the area a paradise for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts, and sportsmen. Ducks, geese, wild turkey, and other game birds are plentiful in the area. Each November, the Swan Festival showcases the beautiful tundra swans that fly from their Arctic breeding grounds to overwinter in the rice fields and wetlands around Yuba and Sutter Counties. At Swan Central, festival attendees can enjoy lectures, visit the kids corner, purchase birding supplies from vendors, and participate in specialty hikes to various locations led by world-renowned bird experts. If you can’t make it in time for the Swan Festival, plan a trip to visit Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, seasonal home to over 200 species of birds including Snow Geese, Bald Eagles, Sandhill Cranes and other wildlife. Spenceville Wildlife Area is another important conservation area that is known for hiking, hunting, and bird watching. The Yuba-Sutter area’s mild climate lends itself well to year-round outdoor pursuits. Cyclists can bike around of the area’s most visible landmark, the Sutter Buttes, on their own or can sign up for the annual Bike Around the Buttes event. Held each April, there are three courses of varying length that wind in and around the world’s smallest mountain range. If it’s fishing you fancy, you can’t do better than the waterways in the Yuba-Sutter area. Striped bass, steelhead, and Chinook salmon migrate through the area making for some great fishing on the Yuba and Feather rivers. The striped bass, imported in to California waterways in the late 1800s, is one of the finest eating fish around. Trout, from rainbows to browns, are plentiful in local lakes and rivers. After spending a day hiking, fishing, or prospecting in the Yuba Foothills, dinner at Café Collage in Oregon House is a welcome treat. Chef Salim Ben Mami’s delectable dinners are inspired by Mediterranean and Asian influences, with an emphasis on fresh, locally-raised ingredients. In addition to stocking local wines, Chef Salim also bottles his own exquisite house olive oil, which perfectly captures the foothill terroir. Olive oils from the Yuba foothills have received national and international awards; two local brands have been hailed as among the top 35 olive oil producers in the world. Find a full line of local, gourmet fares at The Crave in Yuba City. Thompson seedless grapes, now a staple throughout the world, were first cultivated near Yuba City. While California’s table grapes are primarily grown a little further south, the warm summer sun and crisp fall nights yield several varieties of grapes in this emerging wine region. Vintners are producing some exciting new wines at family-owned wineries along the North Sierra Wine Trail. On the rise to becoming the “new Napa Valley”, the region has long-produced premium foothill wines, specializing in Cabernet Sauvignon and Cote du Rhone varieties. A number of dedicated vintners, working small independent vineyards, produce wines which feature distinctive terroir characteristics of concentrated fruit, minerality and powerful structure; foothill wines tend to age well to increasing complexity and harmony. After all that time outdoors, be sure to come back into town for some great eats and an authentic, small-town welcome. Make sure to include time to explore Yuba City’s quaint tree-lined Plumas Street or Marysville’s historic shopping district for a great meal and some leisurely shopping. Bring your appetite and sample ethnic cuisine from Fotine’s Simply Greek Café to Sopa Thai, or stop by a little gem called Linda’s Soda Bar and Grill where locals gather for breakfast and lunch six days a week. For fine dining, stop in at City Café or you can quench your thirst at Sutter Buttes Brewing with a hand-crafted beer poured fresh from the brew tank.
