Yusuf al - Saigh (b. 1933) is an Iraqi poet, short story writer and critic from Mosul. He has four collections of poetry, including Lady of the Four Apples 1976), which mostly contain elegies on his wife, and is one of the most original works in contemporary Arabic poetry. ............................................................................... SUDDENLY ---------------- Her hand in my hand her hair on my shoulder and the road flying by quickly, quickly Her hand in my hand her head on my breast I kiss it there while she touches me finger by finer There we were together the road unreeling, spinning by quickly when the sudden beast of the road pounced and our vehicle spun turning us around spinning with it one moment and then her hair her head her body her hand her fingers in the dust waving goodbye finger by finger- WHY ------- Usually you wake first get up naked from your bed and in my dream I imagine the dawn I open my eyes and let the flavor of water wash my consciousness the beautiful feminine wetness. Usually you come home before I do and I know you are here windows are open the garden is watered flowers are on the table. Usually we go to sleep together now you have gone before me why? WET ........ It has rained and the moon twitches under moist clouds I put on my slicker to walk through empty streets alone you, at my side, my soul, walk too with me, damp with rain.
