Yves-Marie-Joseph Congar (Yves Marie-Joseph Congar, Yves M.J. Congar), O.P. (13 April 1904 – 22 June 1995), was a French Dominican friar,Catholic priest and theologian. He was made a cardinal of the Catholic Church in 1995. has often been credited for his powerful influence at the Second Vatican Council. He was a member of the councils preparatory commission at the explicit request of Pope John XXIII. And during the council itself, he was a member of several key committees, helping compose and edit eight major documents. But only recently did I realize Congar may have been a singular reason the council came to be in the first place. .Congar believed that reform was a vital and necessary dimension of the church. This was rooted in the distinction between the church and the kingdom of God and in the intermingling in the church of both divine and human elements. In light of the churchs constant temptation to revert to institutionalism, it was always necessary to allow room for the prophetic voice, issuing from the margins, even though this might mean attending to uncomfortable truths. ”-Robert Ellsberd
