Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Awards $65,000 to Surry County SchoolsTwo-year grant for its Improving Mathematical Thinking through Teacher Leaders project Dobson, NC (August 4, 2014) – Trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation have awarded a grant to Surry County Schools to support its Improving Mathematical Thinking through Teacher Leaders project. Surry County Schools is working to expand its teacher leadership capacity in mathematics instruction, which will thereby improve student achievement. This grant will help identify and train a mathematics teacher leader in each school across the county in hopes of building the school system’s long-term capacity to make positive instructional changes. “The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation believes that teachers should be supported as they mold the future of our state, and creating time and space for master teachers to share their expertise and collaborate with their colleagues is a critical piece of that support,” said Joy Vermillion Heinsohn, Director for Programs of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. “Equipping each school with the tools it needs to develop and implement effective teaching practices will ultimately help prepare each child for a successful life and career. The Foundation is proud to partner with Surry County Schools as it accomplishes this work.” “Quality teaching and learning in the 21st century encompasses a wide array of skills for success,” said Jill Reinhardt, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for Surry County Schools. “This public school district continuously seeks partnerships to ensure students have what they need to thrive as 21st century learners and contributing citizens of Surry County. It is vital that our school district focuses on internal capacity of teacher leaders to meet the demands of today’s students.
