ZAMBIA under-20 national soccer team coach Oswald Mutapa has picked a 26- member provisional squad for next month’s Cosafa Championship in Lesotho. The players were picked after a two-week assessment, which attracted over 50 players. Team manager Daniel Jere said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that eight players among them Tottenham Hotspur Academy midfielder Staci Calavarias have been dropped. Other players released are defenders Paul Katema (Red Arrows), Lawrence Mwenga (K- Stars), midfielders Gabriel Mwale (Chingola Police), Ephraim Tusalile (Nkwiza), Evans Bwembya (Konkola Blades), Stanslous Kabungo (Misenshi Blue Stars) and Mathews Lungu (Nyimba Secondary School). Jere urged players that have been dropped not to despair but to continue working hard. “No player should think that he has been dropped because he is bad. No. Everyone is good but due to circumstances beyond our control, we can’t pick everyone,” he said. Jere said defender Benedict Chepeshi and midfielder George Mandu both from Arrows have been included in the provisional team. He said the final team to be announced on November 27 will have 20 players. Meanwhile, the under-20 national team yesterday lost two friendly matches to Arrows.
