ZAMFARA CJ REVISITS CASES OF 145 CONVICTS AT GUSAU MEDIUM PRISON, FREED SIX Inmates who were sentenced to death by hanging and those condemned at the Gusau Medium prison have been assured of the state government resolve to soften their sentences to at least life imprisonment after reviewing all processes required. Zamfara State Chief Judge Mrs Kulu Isah Aliyu stated this while reviewing cases of inmates convicted at the Gusau Medium Prison Over one hundred and fourty inmates convicted on different count charges of armed robbery, culpable homicide and other capital offences are currently serving their jails term at the Gusau Medium Prison. Among the inmates are twenty who were either sentenced to life imprisonment, death by hanging or those condemned, and two third of them were brought from neighbouring states of Jigawa, Birnin Kebbi, Kaduna and Kano. While reviewing cases of the convicts, the state Chief Judge released about six of them who were either detained beyond the approved sentenced by the law or those detained on maximum sentences while they are the first timers. For those sentenced to death by hanging and those condemned, the state chief judge assured them of her resolve to write to the state governor for his approval to soften their sentences to atleast life inprisonment after fulfilling all the laid down procedures. While at the Gusau remand home, the state chief judge reviewed cases of twenty four minors detained for various cases of armed robbery, illegal possesion of fire arms as well as theft. The Chief judge expressed shocked with the level of involvement of minors in to duboius activities such as armed robbery and illegal possesion of fire arms. Among the minors whose cases were reviewed by the CJ include one Basiru Mainasara who was arraigned on two count charges of armed robbery and illegal possesion of a pistol which despite insistanse by the Chief judge he refused to informed her were he accessed the gun. She also directed the officials to summon the parents of about three children who refused to show up at the remand home since when their children were detained and directed the grand khadi to hasten the completion of the cases of some minors pending at the various shariah courts across the state. One of the minor brought from Bukkuyum appealed to the Chief Judge to summon his father to Gusau hence he has abandoned him since his ordeal started and assured her his readiness to quit all illegal deals he is in the habit of doing. Another minor who was brought from Wasagu in Kebbi State was also interogated by the Chief Judge but in the course of the explanation she was reliably informed that the boy is a habitual criminal because the very day he was released within fourty eight hours he breaks in to the house of one business man in Gusau and catred away undisclossed some of money before he was susbsequently re-arrested and brought back to the remand home.
